Welshpool Series, Part 3: Broad Street & High Street

‘The Cross’ Welshpool The old bakery on the corner of Broad Street has the most beautiful mirrored panels in the window. One represents coffee, another tea. I absolutely love them, and if I could I would have included many more pictures of them. Moving on… Welshpool Town Hall Welshpool Town Hall The ‘fresh faced’ (after it’s recent restoration work) Town…

Welshpool Series, Part 2: Church Street and Severn Street

I’m delighted that this ‘Welshpool Series’ has been received so well, as I really enjoyed doing it and now may do even more! Once you start looking, you can’t help but notice more and more interesting things, and now I can’t seem to stop. It was lovely to receive so many comments, thank you! Welshpool Series Part 1: Berriew Street

After taking on board a project like this, you develop a real appreciation of the ‘built heritage’ around you. I generally walk everywhere, which makes it easier to notice old buildings and their small details. As I walk I always try and look up at the buildings I pass. I notice all sorts of things now, which before we took…

    Lady Violet’s Window

This week’s Image of the Week is of the stained glass window in memory of Lady Violet which was erected by her husband, George Herbert, the 4th Earl of Powis. A recent Twitter conversation with our rather grand neighbours, Powis Castle prompted me to use this as Image of the Week. They are a great ‘follow’ and have been my…

    Nativity Plays

As this is the Nativity Play season, I thought I’d share this photograph, which was kindly given to us recently by Mr Mike Boote. It was taken here in Christ Church around 1950. I just love the costumes! And it’s nice to see the Apse end in the background. From Left to Right: Back: Geoff Lloyd, Roy Jones, Norma Gittins,…

    On this day…

120 years ago today, the birth of Percy Robert Herbert, Viscount Clive of Powis Castle, was greeted by the bells being rung at St Mary’s and much rejoicing in the town. One of our favourite windows here is dedicated to his memory and was featured as Image of the Week #8. Happy Birthday!

    Repurposed and upcycled!

Many years ago (maybe in the 1950’s) a cupboard was made underneath the stone stairs that lead up to the gallery. Some old school desks (possibly from the Christ Church School next door) were carefully taken apart to construct the cupboard. This beautiful old wood has been repurposed for the second time in its life, as we have used some…

Image of the Week #8 Remembrance Day

On this Remembrance Day, we remember Percy Robert, Viscount Clive, who died of wounds received at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He was only 23, and was a Captain in the Welsh Guards. It was a devastating time for the Earl of Powis and his family, as well as for Welshpool, who lost many sons in World War…

    Image of the Week #4

Over the years we have met many ex Christ Church Choir Boys and they always recall their time here fondly and remember the stern supervision of the Choirmaster and Organist, Edwin Gwalchmai and his wife Lilian. Edwin was the Organist here from 1904 until 1971 (67 years!) and was very dedicated, playing every week. Before he went away to serve…
