Image of the Week #4

Over the years we have met many ex Christ Church Choir Boys and they always recall their time here fondly and remember the stern supervision of the Choirmaster and Organist, Edwin Gwalchmai and his wife Lilian. Edwin was the Organist here from 1904 until 1971 (67 years!) and was very dedicated, playing every week. Before he went away to serve in WW1, he taught his wife Lilian to play the organ to fill his place. Sadly they both died in 1972, and today marks the 40th anniversary of Lilian’s death. They were both very talented musicians and the inscription on their headstone, situated in the churchyard here, reads ‘They made music to the Glory of God’.

Therefore in memory of their huge commitment and hard work, we thought this weeks Image of the Week should be this photograph of both Edwin and Lilian Gwalchmai with the Christ Church Choir Boys taken outside the church in 1965. Notice the open views from the churchyard!
