    karls bit

Back from a fantastic family holiday in Yorkshire, but the work on the rainwater soak aways grinds to a halt, my digger is sidelined! Do I revert to pick and shovel or do I spend the weekend fixing the digger? Having spent many hours on the end of a shovel previously, I have decided take the time to fix the…

    Open Days 2009

By the invitation of Welshpool Town Council we opened Christ Church as part of the ‘Be a Local Tourist Week’. We cleared a small area adjacent to the South entrance and put up an informative exhibition on the history of Christ Church and the work we have done so far. Thanks to all 80+ of you who came! It is…

    The Secret Garden

The South West corner of the churchyard wall houses an old oak door locked and half buried. It was the gate which the Earls of Powis used to access Christ Church after walking along the footpath across the outer park from Powis Castle. With the kind permission of the Trustees of Powis Castle Estate we have transformed this overgrown entrance…

    The House Build

We have completed erecting the steel framework for the extension of the gallery floor. Once the floors and ceiling are boarded and the stud work walls are in place, this will form the bedrooms in the house. Our aim is to complete these rooms first. On the ground floor we have put a block wall in the north aisle arch…

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you buy a church? We weren’t looking to buy a church or even a house. We spotted Christ Church for sale in a local estate agents window and drove around Welshpool looking for it. We could hardly believe our eyes when we eventually found it. We made an appointment to view inside and upon entering the building, completely…

    Drainage Works

The rainwater drainage system needs overhauling as all the rainwater is soaking into the foundations of the building and causing unknown damage to the stonework and damp problems inside. After seeking all the relevant permissions needed to conduct work affecting the graveyard we have begun the mammoth task of installing a new soakaway system. The completion of these works will…

    More Repairs

Recent repairs have included high altitude gardening! A tree was growing out of the finial at the front of the church which was severely damaging the stonework. A weekend was spent erecting the scaffolding alone. After the tree and its roots were removed, the finial was re-pointed with lime mortar. Ideally all the finials need this attention. Other repairs have…

    Repairs

Much of the repair work to Christ Church has been ensuring the building is watertight. Most of the internal damp problems are a result of leaking roofs and blocked guttering. Access to these high areas is one of our biggest challenges. We need to access and renew the guttering on the Nave roof as soon as possible as overflowing gutters…

    Apse Roof

The curved roof at the front of the church was deteriorating rapidly when we bought Christ Church in 2003. It was the only roof never to have been re-slated since the church was built and it had begun to collapse allowing serious ingress of water. This was having a direct effect on the terracotta vaulted ceiling for which this church…

    The Future of Christ Church

When the house is completed at the back of the church, we will take down ‘The Hut’. We will then work on restoring all the interior walls by striping off all inappropriate modern materials and replacing them with lime products. Any damage incurred by years of water ingress will be repaired. We will install under floor heating to the Nave…
