On this day… Lady Violet, Countess of Powis

On this day in 1929, Lady Violet of Powis Castle tragically died in a car accident at the age of 63. I believe the accident occured near the Rhallt on the outskirts of Welshpool. This was a devastating loss to her husband, George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis. He installed a memorial window for her here in the south east corner of the church.

The chancel was full of flowers for her funeral. She was a keen gardener and she was responsible for the restoration of the famous gardens at Powis Castle . She is buried in the family tomb in the churchyard.

Both her and her husband were real visionaries and I’d of loved to have met them. They were great benefactors to Christ Church.
