discovering a ruined chapel…

On Easter Sunday we were out in the foothills of Cadair Idris, near Dolgellau, on a lovely springtime walk. We passed a ruined chapel which, of course, we had to explore…

Penmaen Chapel, Islawr Dref, was a Calvanistic Methodist chapel built in 1883. The roof has gone and the walls are slowly crumbling away. Amazingly some of the window frames are still intact. Ivy and trees are beginning to take over.

The churchyard is still in use. The slate gravestones, with their Welsh inscriptions almost mirror the outline of the mountains beyond.

It is truly the most peaceful and serene place…
