    pointing the west end

Over the bank holiday weekend we hired a cherry picker to point up and repair any loose stonework on the west end of the church. It was really good to get up close to areas that we’ve never accessed before, and to fill in all those holes! The cherry picker was perfect for this job as it reached surprisingly…

Up in the belfry there is a signature of possibly one of the original church builders. We spent the afternoon re-pointing the walls up there. It is so exposed that the mortar inside the walls gets washed away. There is evidence of a lot of previous re-pointing work up there. Image of the Week #82

    And now inside the roof…

Once the euphoria of the completion of the roofing works on the south aisle roof waned, it was time to motivate ourselves to get it insulated (to comply with building regulations) and actually get it finished from the inside. Over the years lime sarking had built up on the lath and plaster ceiling. Before insulating the roof, we decided it…

Showing it as it is… 2014

In January of last year, I posted about ‘showing it as it is’ and revealing the not quite so tidy bits of the church which don’t normally make it onto the blog. It featured two full length shots looking over the pews with all our possessions stacked in a seemingly chaotic jumble. I wanted to record this as a way…

    Up high

Taking advantage of the scaffolding that is in place for the roof repairs we are having done at the moment, I was able to capture this unusual view. Note the new pointing (lime!) – its all getting fixed up slowly! Image of the Week #58

    Landing lights

A house update is long overdue, so I thought I’d show you how the landing has progressed. Over the summer the ceiling and walls have been painted, along with the railing along the edge of the landing (and boy did that take a long time!). The walls are painted in Farrow and Ball’s ‘Pointing’ and the railing in ‘Borrowed Light’.…

    Lots and lots of plastering

Last week the House build took a big leap forward as a huge amount of plastering was undertaken by local plasterers, Paul Nicoll and Chad Davies. They have done a fantastic job plastering the partition wall and ceiling, which will be part of our living room and the block wall between the two pillars, as well as the…

    Lime Wash… Round 2

We have taken down the scaffold tower that has been in the corner of the gallery (our future bedroom) for the last year. Can now have a good view of a little finished corner of the house. Can also have a good view of my first attempt at lime washing. Generally I’m really pleased with the lime wash. I’m mixing…

    Repointing

This weekend was dedicated to doing some much needed repointing on the tower parapet wall. The top of the tower is the most exposed part of the building, getting the worst of the weather from all directions. Sons #1 and #2 worked very hard helping to carry all the equipment and buckets of lime mortar up to the top of…
