    The end of the Cedar

There was a lot of activity in the churchyard last week, as a large Cedar tree was cut down. Unfortunately this distinctive tree had died of a fungal disease and had begun to drop some very big branches, which we could hear drop from inside the church! The churchyard is maintained by St Mary’s Parish Council, so they instructed a…

    Some interior views

We had a fantastic response to our Open Doors event on Sunday. Over 155 people came (breaking our previous attendance record!) to view the interior of the church, and to see our house conversion, and at one point people were queuing to get in! There was a wonderful atmosphere enhanced by impromptu organ recitals and people sitting on pews chatting…

A view not seen for 157 years!

Last week the large Cedar tree was cut down – which I shall write a post about shortly. It has revealed a view of the church which hasn’t been seen for 157 years (Fred and Owen counted the rings!) Image of the Week #51

    Painted landscapes

We were stuck indoors today due to heavy rain, so had to make do with the landscape views which have been painted onto the stained glass windows. This is part of a window in memory of Lady Violet of Powis Castle and is one I never tire of looking at, as it has so much detail and pattern. Image of…

    Quarry view

During the wonderful weather this week, we’ve been exploring the hills and meadows around Welshpool, including going up through Bron-y-Buckley Woods and across the fields to the top of the old quarry. It was funny to be standing on the very hill that the stone came from to build the church, whilst looking at it. Image of the Week #45

    Under the Yew tree

Under the Yew tree in the churchyard is this ‘hidden’ gravestone. Beautiful in the shaded undergrowth. Fred was with me and asked to have the camera to take this photo… …as he liked the way the Yew tree framed the view of the church. A budding young photographer! Images of the Week #43

    Roses

Along side the south aisle of the church runs a flower bed, planted up I believe, by the Head Gardener of Powis Castle many years ago. Next to this flower bed lies the Herbert family tombs, including three of the Earls. At this time of year it looks beautiful, full of pinks and whites. The roses always stand out and…

    Now Showing… no more

We were all really saddened to read on My Welshpool that the Pola Cinema is to close its doors later today. This family run, independent cinema has been such a huge credit to Welshpool. Since living here, we have enjoyed the privilege of being able to walk down to the Pola to watch the latest blockbuster. How amazing that you…

    The Coronation window

The Coronation window. 60 years ago today was the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. There’s an interesting article by the BBC here about the ‘dazzling spectacle, solemn pledges and soaring music’ on the day. Image of the Week #37
